- Anaesthetic opinion should be available prior to the treatment appointment if required
- Carer should be allowed to accompany the child to the anaesthetic room
- Parents should be informed of the potential adverse effects of GA and advise given about return to school.
- Patients should be managed by staff with appropriate training
- Extractions done under GA only when the most clinically appropriate method

- Dental patients should have the same standard of assessment as patients for any other procedure
- Options for extraction (LA, GA, sedation) should be explained to the carer and allow each option to be considered
- The referring dentist should have competency in paediatric dentistry or carry out comprehensive planning for children who require GA
- Children requiring GA should be cared for in a family friendly hospital setting with staff able to provide resuscitation should the need arise
- IV access should be considered for every patient. Topical anaesthesia should be applied
- Staff should be trained in child protection and safeguarding children
