- Oxygen is a treatment for hypoxaemia, not breathlessness
- High concentration advised for critically ill patients
- Prescribed to achieve saturations of 94-98% for acutely ill patients or 88-92% if at risk of hypercapnoeic respiratory failure
- For patients with prior hypercapnoeic respiratory failure, treatment should begin with 28% Venturi in prehospital care or 24% in hospital. If sats go above 92% then decrease the oxygen.
- Blood gas measurement should be carried out ASAP in patients arriving to AED
- Flow rate through simple masks should be adjusted between 5-10L/min, any less and CO₂ rebreathing can occur.
- Tachypnoeic patients with RR > 30 can have the rate of O₂ via a Venturi increased by 50%
